The official Traitors US Instagram account posted a statement addressing the hate surrounding the current season.
“We are committed to making our casts feel safe, respected, and supported — on screen and off,” the statement read.
“The cast of The Traitors are real people, and what happens in the game should never lead to cyberbullying or harassment,” they said.
“There’s a difference between discussing a show and targeting individuals.”
The statement, shared on Jan. 24., appears to be in response to the backlash Colton Underwood has faced this season after his past controversies resurfaced.
ICYMI: The former NFL player and lead of The Bachelor Season 23 previously faced intense public scrutiny following a 2020 stalking and harassment incident involving his ex-girlfriend, Cassie Randolph.
Cassie filed a restraining order against Colton after he allegedly placed a tracking device on her car, sent her “unsettling” text messages, and appeared uninvited at both her home and her parents’ home.
The Traitors US concluded the statement:
“Let’s not ruin the passion for this show with unwarranted negativity and personal attacks. We appreciate your support.”
Though well-intentioned, some commenters called out the irony of the competition series stepping in to defend Colton now.
Especially, when the show hasn’t issued similar statements for other contestants.
Others flooded the comments questioning whether background checks are conducted or if proper vetting takes place during casting.
