Sucks to be a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan right now, as Sarah Michelle Gellar confirmed the reboot is not happening.
Over twenty years after the series ended, fans were bummed to learn the hype for more Buffy, Angel, Spike, and Angel ended up being a nothingburger.
The reboot, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, was first announced in February 2025. It was expected to star Ryan Kiera Armstrong as the new slayer. Sarah Michelle was slated to reprise her Buffy character in a recurring role.

“So, I am really sad to have to share this,” began Sarah Michelle. “But, I wanted you all to hear it from me.”
“Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale,” she continued.
The co-host of Netflix’s Star Search continued by thanking Chloé Zhao, who was directing the project. “I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots. Thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her, and how much she means not only to me, but to all of you. And this doesn’t change any of that.”
Sarah Michelle closed her video with a play on one of Buffy’s iconic lines – “And I promise, if the apocalypse actually comes, you could still beep me.”

Buffy TVS aired for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003. It was followed by Angel, a spinoff series, which ran from 1999 to 2004.
Alyson Hannigan, Anthony Head, David Boreanaz, Nicholas Brendon, James Marsters, Eliza Dushku and Seth Green were among others in the main Buffy cast. Michelle Tractenberg, who passed away in 2025 at the age of 39, portrayed Dawn Summers.
The ‘Buffy’ series ran for 7 seasons beginning in 1997. It was based on the 1992 film of the same name that featured Luke Perry and Paul Reubens.
