John Godwin is sharing an update on his newest grandbabies following their arrival.
The Duck Dynasty star revealed on the Duck Call Room podcast that his daughter, Johanna Mata, welcomed twin daughters — Cassandra and Isabella — who were admitted to the NICU after being born early.
“They’re here too early,” John explained, adding that Johanna and her partner were understandably “awful anxious” to bring the babies home.
Still, he reassured listeners that “they’re in the best place they could be right now.”
Johanna’s Birth Story
According to John, Johanna developed high blood pressure and was placed on a 24-hour watch for preeclampsia.
Things escalated quickly the next morning.
“She called at 5:30 and said, ‘Y’all need to get up here, y’all fixin’ to have grandkids,’” he recalled. “I said, ‘Okay.’”
John admitted he may have gone “over the speed limit a little bit” rushing to the hospital.
By the time he and his wife, Paula, arrived, Johanna had already been taken into the operating room.
Thankfully, the twins were delivered safely. Johanna, however, required magnesium treatment and was “pale for a couple days,” though John shared that she ultimately recovered.
As of a December 28 update, the twins remain in the NICU, but Johanna shared encouraging news on Facebook.
“Both are off CPAP, light blankets, and feeding tubes!” she wrote.
“We are working on eating and gaining weight, and monitoring their oxygen and hearts as they learn to do all the things they need to do to come home.”
She added that the girls are “excelling in everything” and that the family is hopeful they’ll be heading home very soon.
“Thanking everyone for continuing prayers and for the blessings God has given!” she concluded.
Congratulations to the entire Godwin family.
