The Valley‘s Janet Caperna explained why she set her social media channels to private on her podcast, This Side Of The Hill.
Janet’s social media content can only be seen by friends and family:
โI wanted to get into why my socials are all private right now and the layers of vitriol,” began Janet. “I think the best way to start would read some of these very triggering DMs.”
“First, I started with limiting my comments to, if you follow me, you can comment. That helped restrict things a little bit. The people who follow me normally are, you know, those that either like me or can give constructive criticism of something they didn’t like I did on the show or something like that.โ
โBut, it’s gotten so dark and bad almost on a daily basis of threats and slurs and things that now I decided to make all of my social media completely private. [I’m] being very cautious about what I share, especially about my family. I want to explain why I’m taking a break from socials.”
Janet explained she has her co-host, Jared, as well as other friends help manage her social media comments so I don’t “have to see this stuff anymore.”
“But, I want to address this because I hope it helps make things better and maybe shines a little bit of light into what’s going on. And, maybe some of these people will hear their own words back think, ‘Oh. That is embarrassing that I’m messaging somebody I’ve never met saying things like this.'”
“Again, this is dark.”
CONTENT WARNING!
Janet’s DMs:
- You literally make me so sick. You’re the nastiest person I’ve ever seen and you need a lot of mental health.
- You’re absolutely disgusting and most likely a psychopath mother and wife. You think you’re such hot shit. I literally would love to see you in the street.
- I hope you rot like you deserve you worthless garbage bitch. Go drown in a sewer like the dirty attention sinking rat you are. I hope your child grows up absolutely hating you because if you were my mother, I would disown you.
- Sneaky attention seeking bitch. I literally hope you die.
Janet started looking at profiles and started to reflect on the people behind the profiles:
The Valley personality reflected on a woman’s page who was clearly not a bot. “So this girl has 1,900 followers, follows people, has a full bio, including her photography page and she’s like a family photographer. Like, Jason and I and our son like on vacation would hire someone like this to like take family photos for us. And that’s, I guess, the weird thing that these messages have affected me.โ
โBut it starts to get to you when you can click on the face of somebody, look at them, look at their bio, look at their business like just from three clicks of their social media profile, I look through and it makes me wonder, how many people throughout my day am I interacting with that are like this behind closed doors and like this on the internet?”
โAnd it makes me want to hide or not interact with strangers and be like, oh, well, people can look really nice on the surface and look like they have a great job where they do something wonderful. But this girl on paper and on her profile looks like a really sweet, nice person. And behind closed doors, she is saying the most horrible things you can about somebody.”
Additionally, Janet alleged that “someone went and looked up real family members’ names, and started listing extended family members of mine.โ
