On the release day of her album Luck… or Something, Hilary Duff dove deeper into her strained relationship with sister Haylie Duff.
Speaking with CBS Mornings, Hilary reflected on her track We Don’t Talk, confirming the emotional ballad is about their estrangement.
“It’s definitely about my sister and just absolutely the most lonely part of my existence,” she shared on Feb. 20.
“It’s not having my sister in my life at the moment, and I really struggled with thinking about including that on the record.”
Speculation about distance between the sisters has swirled for years, but during this album cycle, Hilary has been more candid than ever, dropping subtle breadcrumbs about their fractured dynamic.
Ultimately, the singer decided to include the song because it reflects her truth.
“So many people are having this experience [of estrangement], and for me, making a record was just going to be all about connection,” she explained.
“I was never going to take outside songs from people. What would the point be if it wasn’t me and it wasn’t my life?”
Hilary also noted she doesn’t know whether the interview or the song’s meaning will reach Haylie, nor was that her intention.
“I don’t know how she’ll react to it,” she said.
“But it is a really personal part of my life that doesn’t get to stay personal, so I might as well say how it is for me as an experience.”
“I’m not trying to say anything bad,” she concluded. “It’s literally just my experience, and that’s really all I feel like sharing.”
Haylie has largely remained quiet about the estrangement.
However, she did publicly support Ashley Tisdale French’s perception of Hilary in The Cut, which is pretty telling.
