Emmy-winning actress Catherine O’Hara passed away, according to reports from TMZ.
Catherine was born and raised in Toronto as the sixth of seven children. She met her husband, production designer Bo Welch, on the set of 1988’s Beetlejuice. The married in 1992 and had two sons, Matthew and Luke.
A legend lost:
Catherine’s career took off with her role on Canada’s Second City TV (SCTV) from 1976-1981.
She became a mainstream name in America when she took on the role of Delia Deetz in Tim Burton‘s Beetlejuice before being known as Kevin’s forgetful mom, Kate McCallister, in Home Alone and Home Alone 2.
My personal favorite Catherine O’Hara movies were her collaborations with filmmaker Christopher Guest, including 1996’s Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show (2000), 2003’s A Mighty Wind, and For Your Consideration (2006).
After years of success doing voice acting in major movies and TV shows, Catherine’s career hit another milestone with the show, Schitt’s Creek. Her character, Moira Rose, is one of the most iconic, quotable characters in modern television history.
Catherine was a mom to many:
Sure. Catherine’s character left her scripted son in the attic while their extended family took a holiday trip to Paris, but Catherine was a wonderful mother figure to Macaulay Culkin throughout his life.
The actor took to Instagram to share his sorrow. “Mama. I thought we had time. I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you, but I had so much more to say.”
“I love you. I’ll see you later.”
Dan Levy and Annie Murphy, who played Catherine’s adult children on Schitt’s Creek, haven’t commented on Catherine’s tragic death yet.
