‘Building The Band‘ is coming to Netflix! Fans of Destiny’s Child, One Direction, Backstreet Boys, and Pussycat Dolls fans collectively rejoice at the talent slated to spearhead the competition show.
A new spin on old concepts:
Seemingly inspired by Diddy’s ‘Making The Band,’ Netflix’s ‘Building the Band’ begins filming this summer, as per reports from Billboard.
Netflix has taken inspiration from its juggernaut dating show, Love Is Blind. In this case, contestants will be isolated as they learn about each other musically. Building the Band “will bring together a number of talented singers.” They will be tasked “with forming their own bands without ever seeing each other.”
Like Love Is Blind, contestants will be “Isolated in individual booths” when “selecting their bandmates.” Contestants will rely on “musical compatibility, connection, chemistry and merit” sight unseen.
The press released teased, “What will happen when the bands finally meet, and looks, choreography, and style come into play? With incredible performances, compelling drama, and one big goal — to find the next great music band — the stage is set for an unforgettable experience.”
Building the Band – the cast…
Host – AJ McLean:
The tattooed ‘I Want It That Way‘ singer is beloved by BSB fans (me, I am BSB fans) for the dynamic vocals he lends to the the group’s five-part harmonies. While AJ is often featured in the bridges of Backstreet Boys songs, he brings big vocals and tons of personality to the table no matter how he’s featured.
The raspy-voiced Backstreet Boy isn’t a stranger to the ‘competition’ genre of reality programming. In case you missed it, he competed (and won) season 2 of RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race as ‘Poppy Love.’
Judge – Kelly Rowland:
Made famous in the iconic girl group, Destiny’s Child, Kelly has seen success as a solo singer. Do I have to remind you of her iconic duet with Nelly on the smash hit, Dilemma?!
Kelly’s Wiki page boasts, “Rowland was a television judge on the eighth season of The X Factor UK.” Additionally, she judged the “third season of The X Factor USA.” Kelly continued “her television career by hosting Chasing Destiny (2016) and starred as a coach on The Voice Australia. Rowland is credited with forming the girl groups Little Mix and June’s Diary from her stints on The X Factor UK and Chasing Destiny respectively.”
In unrelated news, I watched Kelly in Tyler Perry’s Mea Culpa, which I found over-dramatic, campy, and highly entertaining. It earned 2.7 stars on Google, but 4 stars from me.
Judge – Liam Payne:
Liam made his singing debut in 2008 when he auditioned for the British television series The X Factor. After being eliminated in the competition, he auditioned again in 2010 and was put into a group with four other boys to form One Direction, which went on to become one of the best-selling boy bands of all time.
Judge – Nicole Scherzinger:
Nicole may be in a star in her own right, but before she saw success with Pussycat Dolls, the Hawaiian born beauty was found in a Building the Band type show from the early aughts called Popstars. The group was called ‘Eden’s Crush’ and I watched every second of that show!
Nicole judged The X Factor, Masked Singer and The Sing-Off in addition to her massive solo success.
