Teddi Mellencamp‘s doctors have given her a 50% chance of surviving cancer. But, there is one key factor keeping theย Real Housewives of Beverly Hillsย alum hopeful.
In an interview with Nightline, Teddi explained how she’s seeing the stat in a more positive light.
Health update:
Teddi is currently undergoing immunotherapy to battle melanoma which spreadย to her lungs and brain. โI learned this isnโt the best question to ask if youโre doing immunotherapy, because immunotherapy has only been around 10 years.”
โIt [was] one of my favorite things to ask: โHow long I got? What are my chances?โ And they oftentimes say 50/50.โ She responded, โ50/50? I wouldnโt buy a car thatโs only gonna drive 50% of the time. I donโt want this.โ
While she was “initially upset when her doctor told her that the therapy has a 50/50 chance of working,” she sees a silver lining thanks to modern medicine.
The doctor said, “No, itโs only because thatโs how longย immunotherapy has been aroundย so thatโs how long the study has worked.”
โI really like to have control, and this is completely out of my control. And for the first time, Iโm really scared,โ she said with tears in her eyes.
Edwin has been there for Teddi:
The father of Teddi’s children recalled learning about her devastating diagnosis. His first priority was to make Teddi feel โconfidentโ about her prognosis. Also, he prioritized getting their relationship in a โgood placeโ and ensuring their kids were well taken care of.
โPeople think thatโs hard, but for me, thatโs just what I do. No matter what, I will always love Teddi. Sheโs been a big part of my life. I like taking care of people, itโs just what I do. So it wasnโt even like, a question.โ
Edwin continued, โI think a big part of dealing with this situation is feeling confident, feeling like youโre not alone. Her friends [and] her family all stepped up. It helped me a lot.โ
