Teddi Mellencamp‘s doctors have given her a 50% chance of surviving cancer. But, there is one key factor keeping theĀ Real Housewives of Beverly HillsĀ alum hopeful.
In an interview with Nightline, Teddi explained how she’s seeing the stat in a more positive light.
Health update:
Teddi is currently undergoing immunotherapy to battle melanoma which spreadĀ to her lungs and brain. āI learned this isnāt the best question to ask if youāre doing immunotherapy, because immunotherapy has only been around 10 years.”
āIt [was] one of my favorite things to ask: āHow long I got? What are my chances?ā And they oftentimes say 50/50.ā She responded, ā50/50? I wouldnāt buy a car thatās only gonna drive 50% of the time. I donāt want this.ā
While she was “initially upset when her doctor told her that the therapy has a 50/50 chance of working,” she sees a silver lining thanks to modern medicine.
The doctor said, “No, itās only because thatās how longĀ immunotherapy has been aroundĀ so thatās how long the study has worked.”
āI really like to have control, and this is completely out of my control. And for the first time, Iām really scared,ā she said with tears in her eyes.
Edwin has been there for Teddi:
The father of Teddi’s children recalled learning about her devastating diagnosis. His first priority was to make Teddi feel āconfidentā about her prognosis. Also, he prioritized getting their relationship in a āgood placeā and ensuring their kids were well taken care of.
āPeople think thatās hard, but for me, thatās just what I do. No matter what, I will always love Teddi. Sheās been a big part of my life. I like taking care of people, itās just what I do. So it wasnāt even like, a question.ā
Edwin continued, āI think a big part of dealing with this situation is feeling confident, feeling like youāre not alone. Her friends [and] her family all stepped up. It helped me a lot.ā
