Twenty-two years after FOX’s reality show The Swan waddled off the air, Hulu announced a documentary looking back at the controversial 2004–2005 show about “ugly ducklings” who underwent intense surgeries to compete in The Swan Pageant.
The Hollywood Reporter published the show’s logline. The Swan documentary will tell “the inside story of the most controversial reality series of all time. That includes the people behind it and the women whose lives were changed by it forever.”
The untitled doc will be directed and produced by Erin Lee Carr. She worked on Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini, Trophy Wife: Murder on Safari, and Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara. Erin also co-created Hulu’s scripted series Murdaugh: Death in the Family, which I really enjoyed.
Cliffsnotes:
The Swan followed women who deemed themselves “ugly ducklings” get extreme, 3-month physical makeovers — including extensive plastic surgery, therapy, and training for a beauty pageant to become The Swan.
Despite being criticized as “sadistic” and “repellent” for its focus on insecurity and intense procedures, The Swan garnered over 9 million weekly views.
In 2024, an episode of the VICE docuseries Dark Side of Reality TV focused on the show. Botch‘s Dr. Terry Dubrow was a contributing commentator for the special.
