Singer and talk show host Kelly Clarkson is at the center of a controversy around a Brooklyn store, Art of Play, and Molly, a one-of-a-kind animatronic bird that is on display in the store.
Is Kelly Clarkson a Karen?
The first-ever winner of American Idol visited Art of Play after seeing it featured online. “Just drove all the way to Brooklyn to check out this store I thought looked really rad and had a few things in mind to buy.”
She continued, “Literally was looked at as if I couldn’t afford it and was told he could find something comparable for me. Wow, dude. You’re an idiot and just lost a huge sale. But y’all should go check out Art of Play in Brooklyn if you enjoy being treated like Julia Roberts character in Pretty Woman.”
Art of Play countered that Molly was a non-for-sale store mascot, though they noted the artist (Bliss Kolb) could make a twin for $15,000, and claimed Clarkson only spent about five minutes in the shop before leaving.
Unfortunately for Kelly, the store’s video footage was released.
As seen in the video, Kelly shopped, played with the merchandise (as encouraged), and inquired about Molly. She wasn’t in the store but a few minutes when she returned the merchandise she had picked up and headed toward the door. At that point, she got visibly angry when speaking to a staffer before storming out.
That’s my opinion!
After seeing the video footage, I get the feeling Kelly was being a Karen. Sure, she was dressed down, but the store is in Brooklyn. All the shoppers were dressed similarly to Kelly, wearing t-shirts, jeans, and baseball caps. Even the store’s employee was dressed down, even wearing a ball cap at work.
The math doesn’t math for me after seeing how Kelly and the other shoppers presented themselves.
From what Kelly reported, I got the impression the singer stuck out like a sore thumb as a result of her being underdressed, as it was a high-end store. That’s not the case at all. All of the customers were casually clad, even the staffers. Therefore, I’m not buying the ‘Pretty Woman’ analogy that Kelly was trying to sell.
