Southern Charm alum JT Thomas has officially traded Charleston for Bali.
The former local has been documenting his relocation journey on Instagram, sharing the ups and downs of starting a new life abroad.
“I left my community, my friends, my family,” JT wrote on Instagram last Monday.
He revealed that he sold nearly everything — his business, real estate assets, car, even his watch — to “start anew” until things “become normal again.”
“God help us if they don’t,” he added.
Though JT grew up in the United States and spent most of his life in a conservative state, he said the current social and political climate ultimately pushed him to “retire” elsewhere.
He also noted that he’ll be missing Thanksgiving back home this year, a decision that seems to underscore just how serious this move is for him.
“The country that I grew up in was innocent until proven guilty. You could say, ‘I want to speak to a lawyer,’” JT said.
“We’re not treating humans like humans anymore. We’re treating certain people behind our borders like animals.”
Ultimately, JT says he had to go halfway across the world to speak his truth.
Because, as he puts it, “that’s where we are right now.”
I’ll be the first to admit JT wasn’t my favorite during his time on Southern Charm.
He led Venita Aspen on, was clumsy with his words, and often just a real schmuck.
But this? This is respectable and commendable.
I kind of wish we got to see more of this side of him on Southern Charm.
