Jen Affleck received backlash from viewers of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives who think that she copied her song Pink Back from American Idol winner Hannah Harper.
During an episode of Hulu‘s hit reality series, Jen introduced Pink Back as her own musical project. The song is about mothers losing their identities while raising children, and eventually finding themselves again.
But fans quickly noticed striking similarities between Jen’s song and a song performed by Hannah Harper months earlier.
Internet sleuths on TikTok and Reddit have accused Jen of copying more than just the title. Critics claim the two songs share similar lyrics, musical structure, and specific imagery. That includes the obligatory flamingo call-out.
The controversy centers on the phrase “get your pink back,” which has become a popular metaphor for motherhood. The concept comes from the fact that flamingos can lose some of their pink coloration while raising their young before regaining it later.
However, fans arguing that Jen copied Harper’s work say the similarities go beyond the commonly used motherhood metaphor. They pointed specifically to the lyrics, song structure, and imagery used in Hannah Harper’s earlier performance.
