Dance Moms is getting the musical treatment, and the casting news is already exciting theatergoers.
Rosie O’Donnell and Kristin Chenoweth are set to take on familiar reality TV rivals in an upcoming industry reading of The Pyramid: An Unauthorized ‘Dance Moms’ Musical.
BroadwayWorld previously reported that the actresses would participate in a reading for a new musical. The project has now been revealed as a parody of the hit Lifetime series. Rosie will reportedly play dance instructor and reality TV star Abby Lee Miller.
Kristin will portray Cathy Nesbitt-Stein, the dance instructor who frequently clashed with Abby throughout the Dance Moms franchise.
The project is being produced by Logan Clark, who was part of the original Dance Moms production team.
The Pyramid has already had performances at 54 Below in 2023 and The Green Room 42 in 2025, building on the show’s enduring pop culture legacy.
The original Dance Moms premiered in 2011 and ran through 2019. It followed the young dancers and their mothers as they navigated the demanding world of Abby Lee’s dance studio, the Abby Lee Dance Company. The series became famous for its competitive routines, behind-the-scenes conflicts, and unforgettable confrontations between Abby and the moms.
The Lifetime hit also helped launch the careers of several young performers, including JoJo Siwa and Maddie Ziegler.
With Rosie stepping into Abby’s dancing shoes and Kristin taking on her rival, the unauthorized musical is bringing one of reality television’s most recognizable feuds to the stage.
Kristin has about a dozen Broadway credits under her belt, including Glinda in Wicked. Rosie made her Broadway debut as Rizzo in Grease in 1994. Currently, she’s playing the Narrator in The Rocky Horror Show, which I saw last week. I can’t recommend the show enough if you’re in the NYC area!
