Mikayla Matthews is giving more context about her decision to split from husband Jace Terry.
During season 4 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, Mikayla revealed that the two decided to spend time apart while working through ongoing struggles with intimacy — something she says is connected to trauma from being sexually abused as a child.
Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE, the MomTok star shared an update on where their relationship stands today.
“Last season, we dove into the beginning stages of it, and that was me revisiting all this trauma for the first time as well,” Mikayla said.
“It’s still new to me, and it’s new to him, and we’re just navigating it the best way that we can. Unfortunately, I think it’s something that’s going to take a lot more time. I feel like that’s all I can say on it now.”
Mikayla and Jace share four children together and welcomed their youngest daughter, Lottie, in July.
During their time apart, Mikayla says she’s focusing on herself and her healing.
“I think it’s hard anytime you bring up the stuff with sex and intimacy,” she said on the show.
“My nervous system is already in fight-or-flight. I’m already maxed out. My bucket is full.”
Season 4 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives is now streaming on Hulu.
