“We named every plant and the birds outside our window with elaborate backstories. Silly Sally was the noisy one who never shut up—much like us when we got going. We’d strange-walk down streets, him with his perpetually bare, questionably dirty feet – shoes were always optional- me with my inexplicable bounce-step, while shouting T$! and him yelling back ‘JOSEF!’ across rooms full of strangers who looked at us like we’d escaped from somewhere. We didn’t care.
‘What in tarnations?!’ we’d exclaim at absolutely nothing, dissolving into laughter that made sense only to us.”
“I never bothered with makeup around him—my unfiltered face fit perfectly into our disheveled aesthetic of thrift-store fashion disasters. People couldn’t decide if we were fashionably homeless or just confused about how clothes worked.”
